Recommendations to address candidates with criminal records
The Criminal Justice and Employment Initiative has released a brief, "UPDATING NEW YORK STATE’S
EMPLOYMENT RESTRICTIONS for People with Criminal Convictions." They recommend reviewing all laws for overly broad language covering all felonies; adopting requirements that only convictions "substantially related to actual job duties" are considered; time limits for considering offenses that are not serious, job-related offenses; removal of misdemeanor offenses from the list of restrictions; and applying automatic license denials only for severe, recent, and substantial job-related offenses.
