New Mexico considers joining nine compacts
A bipartisan group of 10 New Mexico legislators has introduced bills to join nine interstate compacts, aiming to address the state's healthcare worker shortage by facilitating the practice of out-of-state licensed professionals. These compacts cover various professions, including physicians, physician assistants, psychologists, counselors, dentists, dental hygienists, emergency medical personnel, audiologists, speech therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists. Currently, New Mexico participates only in the Nurse Licensure Compact, while neighboring states have adopted multiple compacts, enabling easier movement of healthcare workers among them. The proposed legislation has garnered support from a diverse coalition, including AARP-NM, the U.S. Department of Defense, the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce, and the New Mexico Medical Board.
