UK: proposal to regulate advanced practice nursing
The UK's Nursing and Midwifery Council has recommended development of an approach to regulate advanced practice nursing. Independent research and consultation with professionals and the public has revealed great variation in how professionals undertake advanced practice roles. Inconsistencies in education and training, qualifications, responsibilities, and governance, as well as the lack of a single definition of advanced practice, can create a risk to the public. Recommendations include developing standards of proficiency for advanced level practice, collaborating to develop an advanced practice principles framework and shared definition, and adding review of advanced level practice requirements to the revalidation and Code reviews.
