UK: independent review of physicians associates and anaesthesia associates
The UK Health Secretary has announced an independent review of physician associates (PAs) and anaesthesia associates to assess their safety, training, supervision, and regulation within the NHS. Led by Professor Gillian Leng, the review aims to address concerns over the roles’ scope of practice and patient care, following incidents highlighting safety issues. Stakeholders, including patients and healthcare professionals, will contribute to the findings, expected in spring 2025. The initiative seeks to enhance patient safety and clarify PAs’ roles while addressing the ongoing debate about their integration into the healthcare system.
