New York considering elimination of PA direct supervision requirement
Following waivers made by the previous administration during the pandemic, New York's current governor is proposing a permanent change in the law to eliminate the requirement that a physician be physically present to supervise the practice of a physician's assistant. PAs would be allowed to diagnose, treat and prescribe for any medical condition without the direct supervision of a physician if they are employed by a health system or hospital and have over 8,000 hours in primary care or non-surgical general medicine. The State Department of Health supports the proposal.
