Utah working toward licensure for immigrant professionals
Recent legislation in Utah allows agencies under the Department of Commerce to license individuals from another state or country if they have education and experience substantially similar to Utah's requirements. The Department has received over 2,600 inquiries since May - 37% from physicians and surgeons, 15% from dentists, 10% from engineers, and 9.5% from registered nurses, with most interested applicants having received their training in Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Ecuador, and Peru. The Department is still looking at licensing requirements of foreign countries for each profession and is prioritizing requests from individuals who already live in Utah or are in professions that have labor shortages.
