Canberra: nurse practitioners and midwives' expanded prescribing authority

Under the Health (Improved Abortion Access) Amendment Act 2024, nurse practitioners and authorized midwives who have received training will now be able to prescribe certain abortion medications, improving access to services and supporting professionals to work to their full scope of practice. The law also requires practitioners who decline to provide abortion services due to religious or conscientious objections to make a referral or provide patients with information on finding another provider.
