Australia: Pharmacy Guild responds to Intergenerational Report
Australia's recent Intergenerational Report predicts that spending on healthcare will increase from 4.2% of GDP to 6.2% in the next 40 years. The Pharmacy Guild of Australia responded that increasing the role of community pharmacists to treat and prescribe medication for uncomplicated conditions could ease pressure on the health system, increase access, and save taxpayer money:
- reduce hospital stays by 352,000 days per annum.
- free up 52,000 hours of Emergency Department capacity annually and
- improve GP waiting times by alleviating the need for 6.5 million GP presentations each year.
