Alberta: regulation of counselling therapists delayed
The Alberta government has delayed the proclamation of the proposed College of Counselling Therapy of Alberta. In 2018, the Mental Health Services Protection Act created the Association of Counselling Therapy of Alberta, which has since created regulations, bylaws and standards of practice for the profession. The government has indicated that they want to do more consultation with stakeholders and the Indigenous community. Without regulation of counselling therapists, Indigenous people cannot receive coverage for counselling sessions through the First Nations and Inuit Non-Insured Health Benefits plan.
