Massachusetts: licensure for midwives and lactation consultants
A bill awaiting signature in Massachusetts would require certified professional midwives to be licensed by the state and require some insurance providers to cover doula and midwifery services. A new Board of Registration in Midwifery under the Department of Public Health would oversee licensure. DPH would also be required to update regulations governing licensure of freestanding birth centers with a goal of encouraging creation of more centers.
