Alaska: union voices opposition to Nurse Licensure Compact
Alaska's Legislature is currently considering a bill to join the Nurse Licensure Compact, a bill supported by hospitals and the state nursing board as a measure to address the nurse shortage. The state's labor union, though, has voiced opposition, noting the compact weakens Alaska nurses' ability to strike in response to wage or work condition issues because they could more easily be replaced by nurses from out-of-state. A union representative also questioned how compact participation would really address the nurse shortage when there's an overall shortage of nurses across all states.
