UK: debate over Physician Associate regulation
The British Medical Association is launching a judicial review claim against the General Medical Council over its use of the term "medical professionals" in materials talking about future registrants as physician associates and anaesthesia associates. The BMA claims that the way in which the GMC plans to regulate PAs and AAs creates a "dangerous blurring of lines for patients between highly-skilled and experienced doctors, and assistant roles." “Doctors are ‘the medical profession’. To describe any other staff as medical professionals not only undermines doctors and the rigorous training journey they have been on, but also confuses patients, who rightly associate the two terms as one and the same."
