In a series of articles, Archinect has explored the history of "architect" as a protectd title and its use in other fields outside of architecture. This article addresses the question to US licensing boards: "Does your board’s protection of the title ‘architect’ extend to similar words such as ‘architectural,’ i.e. an ‘architectural associate’ or ‘architectural assistant’ or ‘architectural designer,’ or the title 'design professional,' or does the board deem such titles valid and legal for an individual who does not hold an architectural license in the state?” Of 28 respondents, 14 boards referred Archinect to their state statutes and could not provide legal opinions. the Other 14 boards indicated that architect-adjacent words are protected, generally to avoid the risk of confusing or misleading the public.
