Workforce shortages in the regulated professions is one of the biggest emerging challenges for regulators. While regulators can address mobility issues through reciprocity and mutual recognition of licenses, with a workforce crisis that is indeed international in scope, where might regulators find themselves involved in solutions beyond international recruitment. Hear examples and lessons learned from two jurisdictions. Australia’s national health professions regulator works under legislation that includes a specific workforce objective. They are seeing emerging models of care where, for example, a hospital department may be run by a specialist located in another country. Ontario is considering alternate delivery models for veterinary care, inclusive of shared distributive models, to address workforce challenges. What are the pressures on regulators to support the response to the workforce crisis, and how can we be clear about where the regulator’s role in that begins and ends?
