The Privilege of Self-Regulation: Use It or Lose It
Self-regulation is a privilege. If regulators are not vigilant, it is a privilege that can be lost; the responsibility for public protection transferred to another entity.
Maintaining the privilege of self-regulation required excellence on the part of the regulator through consistent application of good practices as well as an organizational commitment to continuous improvement. Adapting to external forces is as important as being able to anticipate and drive change, in order to better serve and protect the public interest.
The symposium will focus on the risks to self-regulation, including examples of endangered and lost self-regulation through case studies of what happened as well as thoughts on what might have made the different in the government's decision to end, or continue, self-regulation. Additionally, the symposium will explore ways in which regulators can be proactive in protecting the privilege of regulating in the public's interest.
